COSHH Changes

The Dangerous Substances Directive and the Dangerous Preparations Directive have been replaced by the direct-acting European CLP Regulation. From 1 June 2015, both Directives have been fully withdrawn and no longer have any legal effect. The familiar square orange hazard symbols used often in COSHH assessments are now no longer valid and the new red and white diamond shaped symbols should be used.

As a result, the CHIP – Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations have also been repealed. Transitional arrangements were in place to help suppliers make the move to the CLP system, but from 1 June 2015, chemical suppliers must comply with the CLP Regulation.

Keighley & Skipton based Law firm AWB Charlesworth and Accountants Pearson & Associates celebrate their successful second Charity golf day held on Friday 26th June 2015. The day raised in excess of £2,800 for Martin House, the Wetherby based children’s hospice.

Despite some slightly windy weather, guests enjoyed a fantastic day of golf at Keighley Golf Club to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice. The joint hosts were joined by 13 other teams, including Barclays, Armstrong Watson and Bluefin Insurance. Guests enjoyed a quick bite to eat before a shot gun start at 12.30pm and 18 holes of golf at Keighley’s scenic golf course. After working up an appetite, players then returned to the club house for a three course evening meal, a top and tail quiz and a prize raffle in which some fantastic prizes were donated. AWB Charlesworth and Pearson & Associates thank all the local businesses for their generosity in donating to the day, including Keelham farm shop who donated a luxury hamper, Coniston hotel, Rendevouz hotel and Broughton hall estates. Through these donations alone the evening managed to raise an incredible £1160 in raffle tickets.

Circular economy could boost UK GDP by £29bn, research finds

The UK could boost its gross domestic product (GDP) by £2.9bn a year if it “fully embraced the circular economy”, a study has found.

Embracing the so-called circular economy, where resources and materials are reused as much as possible and services are sold rather than products, could also create 175,000 jobs, with the biggest growth area in plastics recycling, the report suggests.

Independent research from Imperial College London (ICL), commissioned by waste company Veolia, has found that using entirely recycled resources and moving to a service- rather than product-based economy could increase GDP by 0.18 per cent annually.
